The Story Market

Building on a growing collection of recordings made at the car boot sales. Artist Paul Blakemore has documented these unique British markets using equipment sourced directly from the car boot itself – old dictaphones, old camcorders, tape players and cameras, making the process an exploration of recycling solely fuelled by the car boot sale itself.

The Story Market is the next chapter to Car Boot Soul, opening with a trading event on Sunday 13 September, 11am-4pm.  This is open to everyone who wants to trade a personal story they have of an object in exchange for one of Paul’s pictures in the exhibition.  This trade will then be documented in the space and replaced on the gallery walls over the course of the exhibition.

Collecting a new archive of stories from the local community of Weston-super-Mare and adding to the achieve of stories exploring what we really place value on and how we truly move on or through the worlds of things we own.

Building on a growing collection of recordings made at car boot sales, Blakemore has documented these unique British markets using equipment sourced directly from the car boot itself – old dictaphones, old camcorders, tape players and cameras, making the process an exploration of recycling solely fuelled by the event itself. Blakemore has then transformed these stories, objects and artefacts into an exhibition which will be showcased at The Common Room from mid September, where you can experience the whole body of work celebrating one of Britain’s most vibrant and democratic community gatherings.
