Aftersun

Plus introduction and post-show chat led by Dr Jimmy Hay

At a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum. Twenty years later, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship.

Oscar-nominated Paul Mescal and newcomer Frankie Corio are unforgettable as a dad and daughter in Charlotte Wells’s moving directorial debut. Featuring the laughs, heartache and tenderness of a trip that means more with each passing moment, Aftersun captures a family snapshot of astonishing poignancy and has been hailed by many critics as the best film of 2022.

Dr Jimmy Hay, a University of Bristol Senior Lecturer who specialises grief in cinema, will introduce this highly acclaimed film.  After the screening, he will talk for 15 minutes about Aftersun’s searing deep dive into grief and memory, before inviting questions from the audience

“Rare and special is a film capable of summoning this much poignancy: a feeling which lingers well beyond the film’s final, achingly moving moments on screen.”  [5 Stars] Empire

“Charlotte Wells’s debut feature is a stylistically daring, emotionally piercing and beautifully understated tale of love and loss” [5 stars] The Guardian
