More than just time! Volunteering with Super Culture

8 December 202

We have teamed up with Women’s Work Lab to offer a four week work placement opportunity for mums hoping to re-enter the workforce or looking to change careers.

Through the work placement there is an opportunity to gain confidence and concrete skills that can be used in job applications and interviews.

During the past few weeks, we have welcomed Eloise as part of these placement opportunities. We caught up with her to see what she has been up to and how this placement will help inform her next steps.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a Director, Dramaturg and Theatre Maker.  I’ve been working through the Higher Education system and Theatre’s Educational Outreach up and down the country for over 25 years. Recently I have been freelance and this has enabled me to focus on my own writing.  I’m Co-Creative Director of Theatre Builders and write musicals and plays. Writing has been something that enables me to combine work and family in some sort of balance, which is more than difficult as a lone parent

What have you been up to lately with Super Culture?

I’ve been participating in a number of small supportive research tasks to help inform funding bids, website content or grant application pathways.  I’ve also really enjoyed helping at National Trust’s Tyntesfield which is the host venue for the wonderful collaborative project that is “Once Upon A Christmas Time”.  My hands have just about recovered from the rose thorn scratches putting up so many fairy lights!

I’ve enjoyed everything and learned some really useful things, but seeing the transformation and results of the install at Tyntesfield has been my favourite part of this volunteering experience, even if I wasn’t as useful to the brilliant artists.

What makes you smile?

So many things make me smile. In the build up to Christmas there is a lot to enjoy.  I’m happiest planning shared time and experiences with family and friends, which often involve being creative or participating in something creative. I love seeing my children and their friends newly discovering something I am familiar with.  Sharing traditions and creating new ones at this time of year is very special.

 What’s next?

I’m available! I have a Sugarbye (a new musical) R&D that I hope to organise for February to be followed by a short West End run.  My next contract starts in April, so I am immediately available and open to offers.
