Super Culture are looking for people to join our board

Following the merger of Theatre Orchard and Culture Weston we are looking for new people to join our board. If you are interested in having a say and helping shape the future of our work and the creative and cultural scene in Weston and North Somerset, then this opportunity is for you.

Super Culture have a board of trustees who help guide the direction of the organisation, support and oversee the work of our staff team and help champion our work to the wider public, partners and cultural sector.

Trustees do have certain legal responsibilities including making sure the charity is well run and meets its aims, that finances are managed responsibly, that we comply with the law.

New trustees will be supported by existing trustees and the staff leadership team to work through what these responsibilities mean in practice.

Who are we looking for?

The main criteria we are looking for is someone who is enthusiastic about the work we do in Weston and North Somerset and is keen to get stuck in.

You don’t need to have previous board experience. We can offer full support, pairing you with an existing board member to support you through the important bits.

There are a number of areas of specialist knowledge, expertise and life experience that we’re particularly looking for:

– Senior leadership in the cultural sector

– Climate justice and action/activism

– Weston and North Somerset residents

– Finance

– HR

– Data and impact storytelling

We also want to ensure our board reflects the diversity of Weston and North Somerset. We are keen to increase representation on our board from different groups particularly Global Majority, working class, disabled, d/Deaf and LGBTQ+ people.

Time commitment

Being a trustee is a voluntary role. The board meet four times a year, to monitor the management and finances of the organisation and support the leadership team in decision making. Meetings currently take place on Zoom, with an additional annual away day taking place in-person.

You may also participate in specific working groups which might involve an additional few hours per year.

We are able to offer access support and cover reasonable expenses.

About Super Culture

Super Culture was launched in August 2023 – bringing together two of North Somerset’s arts flagships – award winning organisation Theatre Orchard and Culture Weston.

The two have come together with the shared vision to grow an ambitious, playful and inclusive creative culture in North Somerset through world class festivals, events and live performance, creative talent development and a year-round participation programme that enables local communities to connect, get creative and take a lead in shaping their local cultural provision.

The new name – Super Culture – recognises the organisation’s wider remit to promote and support all that is best in creativity and culture across North Somerset, while remaining rooted in Weston-super-Mare.

Theatre Orchard was established as a charity in 2007 as a short term project to support performing arts in North Somerset, and following 11 years building cultural and creative provision with multiple communities became North Somerset’s first Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation in 2018.

Since becoming a NPO, Theatre Orchard’s programme has reached 125,000 people, created paid opportunities for over 400 artists, presented more than 160 productions, 8 festivals, 28 new work commissions and worked with 6,000 people through creative engagement.

In November 2022, the organisation secured a significant uplift in investment as part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio for 2023-2026, enabling the scale, reach and impact of the work to further develop.

We’re specialists in creative placemaking and community participation – creating and presenting ambitious, diverse and unexpected work with, for and by the people of North Somerset. Our work is driven by a commitment to inclusion and believe that world class arts experiences should be accessible to everyone.

Super Culture combines people powered creativity with outstanding international programming to produce a cultural offer with something to surprise and involve everyone – from sublime street art and world class contemporary dance on the beach to climate carnivals, synchronised swimming, poetry slams, feral gardening, community cooking and more.
