We are celebrating our 21st Speakeasy in extra special style with acclaimed guest poet Roy McFarlane, the brilliant National Canal Laureate, former Birmingham Poet Laureate and one of the Bards of Brum, performing in the Opening Ceremony for Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022!

His debut collection, Beginning with Your Last Breath, was followed by The Healing Next Time, shortlisted for the Ted Hughes award and longlisted for the Jhalak Prize. His third collection Living by Troubled Waters (2022) is out now, available from Nine Arches Press.

Roy McFarlane is a poet, playwright and former youth & community worker, born in Birmingham of Jamaican parentage, and now living in Brighton. Roy is a brilliant reader/performer of his poetry, bringing an impassioned energy and dynamism to the language, ideas and feelings that bring an extra dimension to the power of the words on the page. While his books are essential reading, his performance is essential listening and watching.
